The new Tau and Eldar codexes crushed my dreams of a spawn/zombie army, at least for this year's big event. Too much mobility and ignores cover makes all my assault armies really sad.
Instead of continuing that army project, I'm going to take my Eldar allied detachmet from last year's GT and flesh it out with the new codex. I'll bring Dark Eldar or Grey Knights as allies once we know more about missions and scoring.
I'll use the monthly events as milestones to keep the project on track. August is 1k points with painting scored so that'll be my starting point. I'll use this thread for the menial WIP tasks while the blog will hit on progress and finished pieces.
These past few weeks I really hit the ground running. Here's my progress from this week:
Wraithguard unit... primed white.
Airbrushed red. I chose the middle tone here as a wide band to blend up and down. If you start with the lightest tone or darkest tone, you risk over spray ruining your color as you blend. With an established undertone, light over spray becomes highlights and dark becomes shadows. Does that make sense at all?
Purple next. The color scheme can look cartoony at points so I stay focused on the final vision to work towards. In this case the army is supposed to be "The Twilight's Edge" and all colors that you'd see at sunset.
Then black on the bottom.
Orange on top.
Next up will be a coat of varnish and oil wash to get the fine details.
And here's one model with just an airbrushed base coat next to one with varnish, oil wash, and some minor highlighting. All done in one evening. Still have to do gems, gun, and base, but I can do 2 units a week up to this level.
Next up is a wave serpent for the wraithguard. Primed white and then I started with orange this time. The vehicle is large and I want the orange to be central and aligning the following colors off of it.
Then red. You'll notice I went beyond the intended boundaries. This is to help blend the purple edges.
Then purple.
Then black on the outmost edge.
And back on the undercarriage.
Finished up with brown on the undercarriage.
Like the wraithguard, all in one night. It's not nearly finished, but you can see how much time you can save even if you just use an airbrush to lay down base coats.
The plan is to assemble the army and bring it up to this level in chunks to use at the August, September, and October events. That way I can get some practice with the core units along the way.
