My most recent blog post covers some of the Warmachine stuff I've been working on, but I thought that I should share the Necron related stuff I've been hammering away on. I've been trying to figure out how to do a Skyshield for a while now. I'm not sure if I'll actually use it in game, but I do need more space on my display board. This is the Skyshield portion of the model, and I'm working on the side shields and legs. Of note, I used MDF. I thought of using styrene (which I love because it's normally easy to work with and light), but I've found that thin edges easily warp and look horrible. Also, with the laser I'm using, MDF takes longer to engrave and cut than plastics. Because I have to use lower intensity settings (otherwise the wood burns) it takes at least 50% longer to engrave and cut the MDF. I think I'll be cutting some more stuff in the next few days. I'll post it up when it's ready. -Chris P

Here's the base I made up for my display board. I'm hoping that it'll be modular, just replace the front panel for each army & the top for the display. I went with a plastic here mostly because of weight. I have a MDF display board now that I use for my O&G. It's not much bigger than this one, but it's really heavy. I'm trying to figure out how I can incorporate Skipperke freehand into the Necron force. If you didn't know, we're crazy dog people.

This stuff is looking great!!!
What thickness of MDF is preferable when working on a cutter? I'd love to build some terrain, but in the past ive bought mdf cut terrain and it's pretty fragile.
I'd love to chat about doing some hobby project ideas. I wanted to build a new table for the brawl using corridors and hangar rooms.

1/8 inch MDF seems to be preferable. Here's a couple of considerations: 1/8 inch MDF from Lowes or Home Depot has a textured side that may not be of your liking. I ordered 1/8 inch, 24X18 inch hardboard sheets from DickBlick.com. They're pretty cheap, $4/sheet, and they're smooth on both sides.
MDF can be fragile, especially around edges that get bumped. That's why I like styrene more, but the detail work needs wood.
If you want to build something, I'm game. Let's talk about what you want to do.

Got some laser time in today to finish the landing pad. There's some design elements that I'd like to improve on (I can't unfurl all 8 sides at once, there's underside overlap near the corners, and I'd like the armor to overlap more). Next: Bases
