With the advent of ever better and more prevalent 3D printing/printers (got mine in the mail today at that), I'm looking for peoples opinions on the use of printed models in both our local scene and the wider gaming world? Is it more acceptable to print a similar but different variant or to model something as close to the original model as possible?
What are people's thoughts?

I could see printing a gun or something here or there. Copying models is the bad one.
It reminds me of the kid growing up that bought 4 copies of Battle Masters and put the models on corrugated cardboard bases
At one point GW had a GW model only rule or playing in store and at tournaments. I try to stick with that when building models just in case it all goes full swing.
To me it really comes down to one question:
Are you doing it for (1) cool models or (2) to save money/screw GW/protest costs/etc..

Nogle... Not everyone who does these things wants to rob GW/screw the man. This isn't the 60's-70's anymore But in reality, if you are doing it to make cool models, like a plastic version of your balsa wood creations, more power to you. If you are going to print 999 death company, I've seen how they come out, and you loose too much detail unless you have like a $2000+ printer.

I have no problem with 3d printed models, so long as they are not violating copyright laws.

wasn't sure of the use. I picture a future when you buy the printer/files straight from GW and print at home.

I have a 3d Printed Chaos Marine floating around my room somewhere, and it looks like a Dawn of War model.
