Another Crossroads in the bag, and this year was a bit different, I actually played instead of judging. I'll try to post up more about the direction the GT is going, but all in all it was a great time and it looks like we're going strong. I also bagged an award to add to the Strategery's wall of awards. Attachments:

Great job dude!
I like the "grand Strategery trophy wall" idea. Maybe we could all submit pics of our trophies and photoshop them all together for a big wall.

Wow, not even enough people for a GT(need 60, right?).

Yeah, after age of Sigmar was released there was on the order of 40 drops.
Surprisingly, the largest group to drop seemed to be the semi-competitive/casual middle of the pack players.

I would have dropped too. I followed them on the forums and they said months ago they were going to do 9th "no matter what", then didn't.

I would have dropped too. I followed them on the forums and they said months ago they were going to do 9th "no matter what", then didn't. I don't ever remember anyone saying that. During the spring break event, everyone was anticipating a new edition (which would be a continuation of the same format and style with minor tweeks). As AoS closed in, Corey was very clear that future events would be dependent how the GW rule-set was received. Also, to specify why people dropped, several people were so disappointed in Age of Sigmar, that they've left the hobby. That group, while small, had larger effects. Without bodies to fill the hotel rooms and drive the cost down, more people who weren't really excited about the direction of the game decided to stay home too. These are people that in some cases paid, and liked the format (having paid after the format details were released), but stayed home. In terms of the future of Crossroads, we're still going strong. It seems like most GTs are going to switch to Kings of War. Having talked to a bunch of people this weekend, that seems like a good move ruleset wise, and hobby modeling wise (most every unit has a defined physical size, making cinematic bases much more possible. It also lets you use fewer models to achieve the same effects). Right now, Kings of War will probably be the game with the lowest barrier to entry, money wise (and I really mean that. It has the potential to be along the same investment as a large X-wing force). The games also go much quicker, along the lines of 1.5 hours/game. There's also the possibility for other game systems. I think Malifax and Warmahordes are in the running. That said, we need a better organizer for Warmahordes. The guys that handled it this year didn't do much and that showed in the super low attendance. With a strong Rochester group, and groups in B-Low and Syr, there are people. So yeah, This past weekend was really good. It was certianly a lower key vibe (it helps I was on the bottom tables) and then the night board gaming was super fun. The people that made it out were people that like the social aspect of gaming. They wanted to get away for the weekend and have a good time. If anyone's thinking about Kings of War, it's an exciting time. I know that I haven't been excited about fantasy for a while (no end times love for O&G, all I ask is a plastic squig the size of my head), but with the modeling potential that KoW presents, I'm very excited. It seems to hit an interesting confluence of large army sizes (foot print wise), with interesting modeling potential, andlong with a fast game. Alright Scibetta, do I know what I'm talking about? As always with fantasy, I reserve the right to backpedal. How's you like the event? -Crispy

Can't remember which forum I saw it on. But it was a crossroads thread from them, guess it changed when AOS got closer/clearer.
The bottom tables are usually more fun it seems. Great that you had fun

I would have dropped too. I followed them on the forums and they said months ago they were going to do 9th "no matter what", then didn't. 9th isn't really finished yet, so they went with 8th. Unless this is an attempt to assume that Xroads should have played AoS, a completely different game that no one has armies for because no WHFB GT players play it?

Crossroads was amazing, like always. Corey was smart to poll the room, as were the Unplugged guys at declaring KoW for next year. 3 months is long enough and we can't keep playing 8th or 9th Age if we want to community to grow (or even maintain).
I look forward to a future of KoW GTs. It is cleaner, more competitive, easier to learn and easier to get people into. Its depth is in its scenarios and tactics, rather then spending 10min figuring out who in a unit can hit which models...
At this point most of the US GT scene is behind KoW and a lot of people like Malifaux too. the only place that you will find a large group of people who like AoS is Canada. Some places in the Mid West like it too, but not enough for a dedicated GT.
ETC this year is going 9th Age, which really isnt a surprise considering it is a Euro tourney and the Euros made 9th Age. We will see what the next year holds, but in 5 years I assume everyone will be playing either KoW or some game that GW puts out when they get their shit together.
