So, I decided to try and do some Eldar. I got an Airbrush, and I've been messing around with it, and it really makes basecoating one hundred times easier. I'm going to see if I can't crank out a 1850 list by the 12th. Today, I'm nearly finished with my Hemlock Counts As. PaD was having a Black Friday sale, and it brought the price down on the Void Raven to about 45$, so I figured, why not? I've still got to paint the canopy frames, and touch up the black and white on the wings. imgur.com/pm0fjkgWhat do you guys think?

Don't you want a 1750 list for the invitational?
On topic, I list the colors, but you need to add the depth with either a spray wash or some hand-painted highlights, or both.

Great start. I'm glad more people are trying out airbrushing, and more people are posting hobby stuff. For a while it felt like I was posting to myself.
Remember the airbrush sprays very light layers of particles. It takes several layers to create a solid base coat. You have a little white primer showing through the red, indicating you can do a couple more passes with the airbrush to get a solid base coat. It's important to do several light layers, if you try to do a thick coat all at once you can push paint around and make drips and runs.
I think the airbrush is the best painting tool to hit the hobby since its birth. The amount of time it can save anyone who intends to paint more than one army is insane. Saving time often motivates people more, as seeing visible progress is great incentive. Motivation and incentive lead to more beautiful armies to see and play.
Can't wait to see what you do with it. Unless you have a really big deadline in 2 weeks, I would take your time and really learn the airbrush. Then master the finishing techniques with the traditional brush; edge lining, washes, and dry brushing. Those 3 techniques on top of an airbrushed base coat really take you places.

I thought it was 1850. I'm a goofball, I'll keep the Warp Spiders outta my list then. I'm going to be highlighting with Vallejo Orange, I'm just waiting for it to ship. Was going to do it with VGA Rust Orange, but I've found out that the paint is mostly transparent. Also, they sell spray washes?

Oh yeah, Airbrushes are easily my favorite thing in the world right now. Basecoating has never been this easy. I'm waiting on some more paints now, so hopefully I'll be able to highlight with that. I am doing half and half with the airbrush and brush though, once I get Decals on my Wraithguard I'll show those off.

Here's something that I think about when I paint whites and blacks: Thinking of white to black as a continuum from 1-100, I try to only paint either in a rare set of circumstances. When I want black, I go with a dark grey (90-95ish). The same with white, I go with a really light grey (5-10ish).
Depending on what you want to do, straight black is fine, but with airbrushed colors, large blocks of flat color look a little off. With most other colors, you have a little wiggle room to modify the color, but if you're already at the extremes of the range, it limits your options.
I hope that makes sense. As an example, I use the dark Atronomicon grey with black washes to get most of my blacks. Only in the recesses will be really black, but it gives the blacks some depth.

This is great advice Cripy - I eventually backed into the same conclusion. From the old GW line I also really like to use the Shadow Gray as a drybrush - it has a bit of blue in it and adds some depth.

I'll probably keep it pitch black for this month, as I'm working all week, but I've picked up 3 VGAs grays, and can't wait to try them.

New update, today I'm 90% finished with my Wraithguard. I just have to do some gemming on the other 4, and then I'll varnish them. Seriously, Wraiths are my favorite models in the Eldar Range right now. imgur.com/UIUA5pc

Got some work today, on a Forgeworld model I was surprised with for Christmas. I had ordered 3 Hornets that are on their way here now, but I guess I'll run 2 Squadrons of 2 now. Anyways, here's a WIP shot of it. imgur.com/bAj6NOI

Solid looking blends. Are you going to apply some cosmic serpent stencils?

Solid looking blends. Are you going to apply some cosmic serpent stencils? I would love to, but I'm having a hard time finding sellers with pre-made stencils, do you have any in mind?

Fallout hobbies has rose vine stencils, but no serpents. Just get some vinyl sheets, and cut out some of your own. If you want i could do it for some trades.
