Hey guys, I'm putting this into the off-topics thread as I don't think it really applies to any of the above threads. I want to pick at the brains of the local gamers for a bit and get your feedback. I've been on these boards since its inception and we seem to have had a strong, regular following but lately this board feels like it is becoming a ghost town. Occasionally there are discussions about events, new products, and someone showing off their latest painting but nothing like it was in the past. I'm interested to know why that is?
Is it the change in the local tournament formats of late?
Is it the was GW has changed their business practice in the past year or so?
Are we simply moving onto other aspects of the hobby?
Or are some people just moving on with their life outside of the hobby?
For me I guess its a mixture of the first three.
Tournaments:
I've admittedly stopped attending 40k events for almost a year now and exclusively only attend x-wing events. While x-wing is fun and quick to play in a tournament it doesn't make for a fun battle report. 40k has become such a book keeping nightmare that I can't see how its possible to write up coherent notes and take pictures while trying to finish a game on time. So I can see why there are less posts coming in about battle reports. Are many people playing games outside of events at there homes or local gaming places? To me, those were the games where I used to type up the long and detailed reports but it seems like its really hard to line up a narrative driven game these days. I'd love to play AoS and bat-rep the shit out of it since the narrative missions look fun but a lack of places to play the game prevent that from happening.
GW:
Yeah, this is a somewhat sore subject with me so I'll try not to troll this part too hard. Let me preface that I still love the hobby. I love the models, the fluff, and I love building terrain, painting, and doing conversions. But as I mentioned above, my only source of games in the last few years have really only been tournaments so without having anyone to play with outside of events I've little reason to play the game. I'd love to get my hands on the Calth box and paint more word bearers but until GW gives me a codex where I can make them usable I see no reason to buy the box set. Since I'm not playing much 40k at all, I have very little incentive to post pics, write bat-reps or post tutorials on terrain in regards to 40k on these boards.
Other gaming hobbies:
This is probably one of the biggest factors influencing my posting habits on the board. As I mentioned above, I'm still actively painting, modeling, building terrain and so on, but most of these have been for games like Age of Sigmar, Frostgrave, and xwing. I've done very little with 40k other than the occasional terrain piece. This leads to me posting pics up on the different facebook groups that I've joined in the past year instead of here. I've always felt that this was a 40k based board and that no one would be interested in seeing pics or tutorials for other gaming systems on this board.
Moving on:
This will happen to people in all hobbies so I don't think this is as a huge factor into why there are less posts. We all have family commitments, job commitments, and general events that impact our lives and affect our hobby time. My only concern is that while its inevitable that people will move on, are we bringing in enough new people who will utilize this board? Jump back 4-5 years ago, before this board started, and the primary board around here was the Da Boyz. Ever since the little episode that took place a few years back that board has dwindled to almost no traffic other than the occasional Googlebot checking out the site. I'd hate to see this board head in that direction.
So tell me, am I over-reacting? Is there a reason to be concerned? Would you guys like to see more stuff on these boards that are not 40k centered? Would you guys be willing to post more 40k/non-40k related topics? I'd love to hear what you have to say.
