Honestly I'd rather see this group move to a FB page. There are a few reasons for my feelings on this:
- No new people have really been coming to this forum. Its pretty much down to 10-12 people conversing on it. Putting it on FB makes it easier to access for new players and we can easily access it through our phones/ computers / etc.
- No one really uses to message feature. People respond to about 50% of the messages I've sent this year. We can just create group chats or personal messages using FB. Since most of us have our feeds on 24/7, it correspondence is much faster.
- Promotion on this site doesn't help the community as a whole. If we want to grow our community, we have to make the event promotion easier to access. Plopping events for millennium is great for the 10-12 of us, but then we have no way to share the event other than linking the info to other people or word of mouth. Using FB to create tournament/events invite pages makes it easier to share with other people and could grow things out again. Good example is 13th legion and their events. We share and invite people all the time. Even with the one trek we get an awesome response from players.
- Forums are a dying medium. A lot of people are slowly pulling out and using other ways to communicate. Banter is saved for reddit/4chan, events are on FB. Unless you are an important forum like warseer or dakka, the flow of people will not be there. People lose interest if there isn't a constant reason to visit a site.
- Hobby logs can become a chore, and seldomly do people like to constantly sift through old content. The only exceptions being people who are amazing hobbyists ( Aarons' projects come to mind) who get replay out of their old posts. Most people just want to post updates on their progress; where a burst of encouragement or hobby advise is needed. I feel like FB pages where people upload photos does a fine job maintaining that job. If you need a showcase of your collection, then start a blogger site, and and its link whenever you want to show new things on FB. Also, if you are taking pics with your phone, you can automatically upload them onto FB, making project updates super quick and easy.
I still Check out warseer due to their awesome hobby logs, but other than that there are just too many other mediums that make communication that much easier. I've only logged in a few times last month and haven't really missed much.
Would you guys be opposed to testing out a grand strategy FB page? I think it would actually be fun with 13 legion and beef and wing guys jumping between pages and having some healthy cross traffic of players. 13th legion has a chapter now in syracuse and it has improved their community just by having a FB community.

Koszka, I've been thinking about this as well and crispy mentioned something similar earlier in the post. I follow a bunch of different groups on face book (some public and some closed) but one of the nice things is that I can sit at the table in the morning and eat breakfast while catching up on the latest FrostGrave, age of Sigmar, xwing, 13th legion, and terrain building updates all while on Facebook and I don't need to hop around different threads.
As Nogle pointed out in his last thread he only is interested in seeing posts on certain games and I'd hate to flood this board with random games since it is a 40k centric group. At least with Facebook I can follow the groups that have similar interests as me and post on there.

I'm still pretty new to this whole board thing but i kinda agree with Koszka and others, that I would probably prefer facebook. I know its harder to roam and lurk but you can always ensure feedback from notifications about posts and things of that variety.
It might be a bit difficult to revisit old things without proper organization but I think its doable. I am not too familiar on how to operate facebook event though I am on that more than here but I think it could help. Also if we just so happen to add a new dude into our click it would be easier to get them to the group because facebook is a medium everyone kinda knows now.

OK, here goes Tournaments: I personally have been going to less tournaments for 4 reasons 1) a comment on here of having no respect for people that switch marine books to whatever is best, really hurt and hit home and made me not want to go for a while. I`ve been fighting that for a while and am almost to the point where im not going to let it affect my fun 2) no passion - outside of Erie, I don;t feel the passion from the TO`s. though, this changed at the AOS tournament last month at Millenium. Hopefully there is some plan at Millenium to get things going for 40k. If not already, someone should step up. Also there should be a brawl primer out there in the early summer. 3) I don`t understand how to make lists/tournament is too restrictive 4) $, when you add in tournament fee, giving someone money for gas(or feeling like a dick for not giving $), lunch and the late night dinners, you`re looking at over $50. thats at least two weeks of allowence (aftr incidentals) for me Lists on the site: 1) I have a hard time commenting on these because my opinion doesn`t matter right now, I have no constructive crtisism because im out of touch Facebook: The problem I have with that is that its exclusive, If you don`t have facebook you can`t see stuff. Anyone that googles this place can come here and look at stuff. In facebook its harder to lurk. lurking is important for people to get used to the group and become part of it gradualy Other games on here: I look at peoples models they put up for other games and skim articles so I dont look too dumb when people are talking about it when we all get together, but for the most part, I don`t care. I would be interested in all Specialist games, Zombicide and the Walking dead game coming out Also, probably would help to get the blog going again to pull people in I saw that comment, and even I felt a little kicked by it. I mean, they're marines. As long as you say what book they're running, I don't mind playing against them. That's like saying you can't run Farsight because your army isn't painted up in the Farsight colors.

I always forgot to log on, honestly.
That and this being mainly a 40k forum and I've been playing less and less 40k. Something I don't see changing in the future.

I honestly feel that facebook is the only viable means right now. Its a much more viable medium. Nogle, you are literally the only person I know without one. I have no idea what valid argument you have against getting one, you could set up a Warhammer name only account like legion Steve does.
I have to admit that I barely follow this site, everyone else on here is usually on facebook too.
The way I see it, its a free world. You can do or not do whatever you want. If you want your posts to be read you have to put them in front of people. If you check the traffic stats on this site Kevin, I think you will see that there are not many people left on here.
That being said, the people left on here are my friends, I would prefer to share my thoughts with you the most, but it would be nice to consolidate.

Hopefully Steve gets the 13th legion site really going. That's supposed to consolidate a lot of things too.
Only thing I need to know is tournament details(date and rules). Whenever I see some I put them up here(reminds me, I need to put up something about Niagara falls Ontario tournament next month)

So, in response to this thread we started a Facebook page! I think it was a no-brainer. It was one of those things where I thought, "yeah, all these points are valid."
I think we can use both mediums, and whatever shakes out will work for people. Facebook does offer easier picture integration, and event planning.

Good idea Chris. Most important thing on here is to make sure the announcements are up to date
