Scaled the test scheme up onto a broadside. Added more blue to the base grey, played around with sponges for weathering, and chose orange as an accent color. It looks pretty good and feels right now. I have plans for freehand in white for numbers and letters. Maybe different units and characters will have white or black armor panels, and with the freehand numbers and letters, each model will be unique within the army. Now to the grind...

WIP progress. About 80% done each now. Did a freehand D on the devilish nose. Each model will have some freehand numbers and letters for unit markings. Did some white and orange panels on each. Just need to paint the missile pods on the BS and going to airbrush engine glow on the skimmers. I'm pretty happy with the scheme as a mellow natural scheme with tons of weathering and battle damage. It's fast too. If I can manage 2 days per model I may actually get it all done in time.

Thanks dudes.
I want them to look at home on one of my tablewar mats. Should I base the army on city rubble or snow?

Snowy city rubble, I think that would look best.

I agree with dudeisuck, I think a snowy urban theme would fit well. But, if you'd have to choose the snow would make more sense with the colors, but the ruins would offer a nice contrast...
I say city ruins. It's 40k camo doesn't always need to match terrain.

I love the idea of snowy urban. I could build the base with rubble and paint it up, then dust the horizontal surfaces with snow. I'll see if I can make it work.

The batching begins. Each unit will have varying amounts of orange and white, see the y'varha.

Love that model (yvarna) if the rvarna wasnt a little bit cooler i would of gotten that one. Do you think yellow is a bit much for the missles though?

Mixed feelings. There's only so much you can do with a natural/desaturated palette before the model loses all interest. Something has to draw the eye and draw it into all the details where true appreciation occurs. My inspiration to execution has evolved a couple times and the orange was half a random grab and half educated guess at color theory. It'll all come together once I start airbrushing OSL on vehicle vents and weapons. Plus, I wanted to differentiate the SMS and HYMP to help my opponents understand my dice pools a bit. Decided to work on a couple fire warriors tonight. Here's the post session shot.

Just did a quick Google search of usaf missile tips says blue is dummy round, yellow is explosive yield. Plus I like the way it looks, very nice
