As the years have gone by, my appreciation for army appearance has changed. More and more, I'm drawn to muted schemes with lots of grit, realism, and weathering. The crisp, clean, bright colors look nice for show, but would be unrealistic in battle. Maybe it's these new printed table mats I bought at DaBoyz. I've had them on my table for 6 months and when I lay out armies and terrain I want them to be super realistic like the mats, not like brightly colored toys. So I'm going at this Tau project from a new perspective. They were supposed to be black & white to match my police GK, but I haven't even bought the new GK codex or used the army in years. So I'm thinking a new scheme will re-light the fire and give me enough drive to power through the army for the brawl. Here's my inspiration by Awaken Realms commission studio. The goal is a heavily worn and weathered metal look with a lot of deep red glow and OSL. Maybe some other colors for different weapon glows. What do y'all think? Would it look cool spread across a tau army with a lot of suits and skimmers? Or is heavy weathering a waste of skill and space when you could have bright colors and pretty freehand?

I think that'd be awesome, you don't really see Tau with heavy weathering, and it'd be a nice change of pace. Additionally, whatever tech adept that let that Thanatar get in such disrepair should be shot.

My test model is pretty similar to theirs. I should have started with a larger suit or vehicle as the effect is hard to replicate on infantry models, but I think I can make it work.

whatever gets that painting spark going again. I'm not a fan of OSL though.

What are you thinking for a tertiary color? the white and orange/red are very nice combination.
Purple? It almost looks like you are using a purple wash on your white already. Is that my imagination?

There's a purple wash on the legs. Blue wash on the armor plates. Orange lenses. Browns in the weathering. It's a pretty full palette just desaturated into washes.

That firewarrior looks awesome! What were you planning on for the base? I've been doing some Mars style ones with the Valejo basing paste, and can take pictures if you'd like.

I'd like to have an army based to match one of my tablewar mats, so city rubble or rock & snow. City rubble would be appropriate for the palette and weathering, I just don't want the colors to be identical and have the models blend in too well.

Are you going to be painting the rifle anything? I think it needs some color, or at lease something to offset from the body.

Do you think you can repaint an army in this amount of time? God knows im going to be pushing it Tbh my new list is so radical, the only thing needing repaint is one piranha. 4 piranhas are new, as is the y'varha. I never got around to my broadsides or fire warriors so yeah, whole army needs paint no matter what scheme I go with. The weathered version is prolly even faster as airbrushing grey to white then hand painting the black areas of the "police" scheme is very slow. Garner - it's a test model the gun is just primer/airbrush. I haven't painted it yet. Backpack too. I only painted armor and legs.

Was the armor chipping done with paint, or did you use a chipping medium?

Brush. I started to dabble in hairspray chipping but haven't mastered it. Haven't gotten around to sponging yet either tho I prolly will have to for speed purposes. I think Kenny from next level did a sponging tutorial ill have to check out.

Also, if you need Sponges for weathering, I've got tons.
